Can I keep my turtle in a child-size plastic swimming pool?
bored asked:
Having the turtle tank in my living room is getting to be a burden and sometimes smells.
I was thinking of moving my turtle to my bacony outside in a child’s plastic swimming pool, like the one’s you can buy at Wal-Mart for $15.
I think I can decorate it nicely with river rocks, REAL plants, baby feeder fish for friends and big spots for him to chill and sunbathe. Im even thinking of getting a heavy-duty water filter and heater. I’ll figure out to to work those into my plans later.

Do you see anything wrong with keeping my turtle outside on the balcony? I dont think he could get out and the sun would be good for him…Do you see any major flaws?
Any ideas/suggestion would help!
i could never forget about my baby! master shake is his name. he’s just really smelly and im sure he would enjoy some summer sun. i wouldnt forget about him though.
p.s. i go through filters like crazy! he’s a sh!tter…
i also live in a third floor apartment so the smell is concentrated in my tiny home.

yes but you better keep him well protected because all kinds of animals like a tasty turtle snack, Racoons possums hawks dogs cats. Make sure he doesn’t get too much sun since he could overheat

yea thas a great idea….it wont hurt a bit.just prob leave a section of the pool under a tree or somthing so the turtle has some sort of shade to hide under,,.,,as far as the balconoy….shoott looks like your going to have a small pond out there now….. just make sure he dont have direct sunlight all day or you can find him sizzling like a snail its ok you dont want your home smelling like a jungle anyways

I don’t know where you live but make sure you get that heater if its cold and a filter will work WONDERS. My only problem is predators. You dont want a hawk or anything getting him. You can clean the tank in your living room that should help the smell… get a filter. Turtles aer escape artist so make sure that you know for a fact he cant get out. make sure he still gets the attention he needs the heat and everything. I don’t see much wrong with it except that it seems like you are almost putting him out there and forget about him. thats what most people do. they put them outside and then they get neglected. it still needs to be cleaned and everything. keep that in mind. Good luck

Only flaw I find with this is….wildlife & strays. How do you plan on making sure that your turtle is safe from the grasps of hungry birds and other animals that may have access to the balcony?

It sounds like a good idea, as long as the placement is well-thought out. It would need to be in an area that can be protected from any wandering animals in the neighborhood and from wildlife. Even if you haven’t noticed any previously, you might be surprised by night-time visitors that you haven’t previously seen, especially if they smell a new animal in the neighborhood. Additionally, I would suggest looking into lawn ponds rather than children’s wading pools. They’re deeper and are made for just this sort of thing (and not that much more expensive, if any, than the wading pools). Best of luck, and if you decide to do it, I hope your turtle enjoys its new habitat!

check with your local pet store.you will need special turtle food, partial sunlight part water, part dry land.no cool drafts! turtles can catch pneumonia and die. not quite fair for a trapped turtle. hope this helps.

What you have going here sounds great but you will definitely have to get a filter and heater. The filter helps with cleaning and making it easier on you with cleaning it so much. The heater will be great because at night it will get cold even during the summer. But honestly your main concern is birds, and other animals that will want to terrorize your turt. When I read about your tank smelling, do you add the right type of chemicals and scoop out the uneaten food? If you don’t do those, it can smell.

yes, but provide some shade in the area and maybe some area to climb up out of the water, but not high enough to climb out of the pool.
