Is it okay to take my 3 month old baby in a private swimming pool?
Jen asked:
It’s hot out and I want to go swimming! But we have the baby with us so I feel like we cant go cause the chlorine might bother his skin or he should’nt be out in the sun. Do you think it would be okay? Has anyone brought there little one out in the pool at 3 months? And if it’s okay what should he wear and what kind of sunblock should I get?

Sure it’s ok! I generally put my kids (when they were babies) in a swim diaper (Huggies & Pampers both make a version). It doesn’t swell up so baby stays comfy in the pool. If you want to, you can actually find swimming suits that small.
Buy a baby formulated sun block. They are usually extra gentle and have a higher SPF rating. Banana Boat makes a good version.
Be sure to take a hot along, as well. Babies need hats to shade their heads as well as their eyes from all the sun.
Have fun and stay cool!

It’s fine. Just make sure your baby is fully covered in sunblock and don’t stay out there too long.

He’s very young to have out in the sun and I believe that sunblock is not supposed to be applied until they are 6mths of age. Check the bottle to make sure. I was told it is ok for babies to go into the pool but to keep their mouths out of the water. Maybe you could keep him under an umbrella, dress him in a onesie, and have him wear a hat…a quick dip in the pool…maybe 5 minutes and then back under the umbrella.

The advice is to get babies into water as young as possible. You should try and get the highest factor waterproof or water resistant sunblock possible. Factor 50 if you can and reapply once out of the water. Don’t forget floatation aids and a swim nappy.

yay this would be fine in fact its highly recommended the younger the better as they get used to water
if its private and just family then they don’t really need to wear anything the odd pee pee wont do any harm or you can buy little swimmers which are a bit like Nappy’s but only are for swimming.
hope this helps enjoy and dont foprget babies sun protection

I’ve been taking my daughter swimming since she was that age. They make special baby swimsiuts that have a terry-cloth like material on the inside. Those are the best for babies. The diaper ones aren’t so nice. Get some baby sunscreen in high SPF-I use 45 or 50-and slather him up. I also bought a little swimmer thing at babies r us. It looks like a walker, but it floats. It has a little sun shade on it to keep them out of direct rays. As far as the clorine goes, I just gave my daughter a bath afterwards and put lotion on her. Her skin never dried out. She loves the water now, and she squeals when we take her swimsuit out because she knows what’s coming! Have fun-and try not to listen to other people who would put you down for having fun pool time with your little one.

I don’t think that’s a great idea. Besides the concern of chlorine or sunscreen irritating his skin, the water that is cool and refreshing to us may be bone chilling to his little body.

Hunny, I live in Arizona, so I feel your pain about the heat! I don’t see why it would be an problem… the pool hasn’t hurt my baby yet, I’ve been taking her swimming since she was old enough to hold her head up and she is just about 9 months old now. I agree with the answer about putting babies in early on in life… it makes them comfortable in water, which is very important! There is this little inflatable float from wal-mart that is a turtle and has an inflatable shade… my daughter loves it! Also, we put this little bucket hat and baby sunglasses on her. Wal-mart and Target carry washable swim diapers, which are about $5 and last all season long… MUCH cheaper than disposables and I have found that they dont make swim diapers small enough for 3 month olds (The smallest size I have seen was a size 3!) Have Fun!

Parents used to be advised to wait until their baby had had their immunizations at two, three and four months before they took their babies swimming. But government health experts no longer believe this is necessary, so it’s really up to you when you start taking your baby to the pool. “There are no medical grounds for waiting until your baby is immunized. Yes definitely put your baby on sunblock for sensitive skin and put baby on infant swim gear. Or just a huggies little swimmer! Have Fun!

My son went into the pool for his first time just before 3 months of age. He has very sensitive skin and sunblock and chlorine had no effect on his skin. All baby sunblocks say 6 months or more or speak to a doctor. I didn’t speak to my doc but I just put a dab on the top of my son’s foot the day before swimming and there was no spot or mark on that area so I slathered him in the sunblock. Use the sunblock 30 minutes before sun exposure though. And if you can, get a blow up pool seat with a hood over it. Those are amazing, and they say 9 months and older but I put my son in one at 3 months and leaned him back and swam around with him and he was a comfy lil man. Good luck and have a great time swimming in this heat!
