Lena

As some writers have said the drain is part of the circulation system for a pool and not really a drain at all, just another suction point.

If you want to drain your pool use a submersible pool pump, it can do the job much faster and safer than your pool pump will. Mine drains the pool in several hours.

You're welcome!!

I would like to remind pool owners to take extra care to keep the drain cover on their drains.... some horrific accidents and drownings have occured when the cover with holes in it, is not on that drain!!...usually children, who are small enuff to be held by the suction in those drains....

Sally

If it's an in-ground pool, the drain is functional. The filter pump pulls water from both the drains and the skimmers through the filter and then back to the pool. Some pools have a drain setting to pump down the pool. Some, like mine, have a hose bibb on the pump plumbing to attach a garden hose if I ever want to drain it. Before you attempt to drain a pool yourself you need to get professional advice because you could damage the pump when the water level gets below the skimmer level.
