Why does swimming pool water turn green from blue?

Emily W asked:

There’s this swimming pool in front of my block and the water used to be blue during summer and as it gets colder outside and it’s gonna be fall soon I see the water turn dark green. Why is it so?

The owners aren’t putting chlorine in it. Algae and other bacteria turn it green. You have to put extra chemicals in when it rains a lot too.

They are not keeping up with the chemicals.

I remember most pools in Russia in the 1980s had algae in them.

One time I even saw frogs…..
